Parliamentary Staff Sharpen Skills in Writing Press Releases and Crafting News Angles

Parliamentary officers from the Senate and the National Assembly of Cambodia successfully enhanced their knowledge and skills in media communication through a five-day training workshop, “Techniques to Write Standardised Press Releases and to Formulate the Right Angle for News Pitches”, held from 29 July to 6 August 2025. The training covered ethics, principles and techniques for writing media advisories and press releases, formulating messages and news angles, and avoiding or mitigating information risks. Participants were highly engaged throughout, from Q&A sessions to group and individual exercises, ensuring practical application of the learning.

The above result was led by Dr Chhay Sophal, an independent media and communications specialist who focused the lessons on theory, principles and techniques, based on his extensive experience in the media sector. The trainees expressed their satisfaction throughout the course, as confirmed by the feedback responses. In terms of skills-building, the average score from the pre- and post-tests indicated an increase from 2 to 4 on a scale from 1 to 5 (1: Know nothing, 5: Excellent).

Ms BUN Sophary and Mr VONG Visal, the trainees’ representatives from the Secretariats General of the Senate and the National Assembly, expressed their appreciation for the training. They emphasised the importance of applying the knowledge gained to improve the quality of work within their institutions.

Mr Jeffrey COLE, Acting Capacity Development Director of PCAsia, noted participants’ dedication and their active engagement during the training. He reaffirmed PCAsia’s commitment to enhancing the professionalism of parliamentary staff of the Member Parliaments of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).
